BRASILIA, Brazil — Brazilian authorities are increasingly relying on forensic science to combat illegal gold mining in the Amazon, using advanced laboratory techniques to trace the origins of gold and strengthen efforts against one of the region’s most destructive environmental crimes.

At the center of the initiative is a specialized “gold lab” operated by Brazil’s Federal Police at the National Institute of Criminalistics in the capital, Brasilia. There, scientists analyze gold samples collected from across the country, using sophisticated testing methods to determine where the precious metal was extracted.

The project aims to curb illegal mining operations that have devastated large areas of the Amazon rainforest, threatened Indigenous communities, and contaminated rivers with toxic mercury.
