Blythewood

Drivers in the Columbia-area should plan for a temporary detour this January as a key bridge near Blythewood undergoes maintenance.

Beginning January 5, the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) will close the Lorick Road bridge that spans Crane Creek North Branch. The closure is expected to last a little over two weeks while crews complete necessary repairs.

During this time, traffic that normally uses the bridge to travel between U.S. Highway 21 and U.S. Highway 321 will be redirected to Koon Store Road. While Lorick Road itself will remain accessible for local residents, it will not be open to through traffic.

According to SCDOT, the bridge is projected to reopen by January 22, though that timeline could shift if winter weather causes delays. On average, about 1,400 vehicles travel Lorick Road each day. The route plays an important role in connecting Highways 21 and 321, both of which serve as major north-south corridors in the region.

Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time and follow posted detour signs during the closure period.
