GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — A Michigan community is mourning an unimaginable tragedy after authorities said a father fatally shot his wife and their six children before setting their family home on fire and taking his own life in what investigators have described as an apparent murder-suicide.
The victims were discovered Friday inside their burning home in Grand Haven, a city on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Officials said the children ranged in age from 5 to 15 years old, making the incident one of the deadliest family homicide cases the state has seen in recent years.

Authorities Identify the Victims
During a news conference on Monday, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jake Sparks identified the deceased as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, his wife Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a house fire late Friday morning. After firefighters extinguished the blaze, they discovered the bodies of all eight family members inside the residence.
Autopsies later confirmed that each victim had died from gunshot wounds, authorities said.
“The investigation at this point shows that this is a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Capt. Sparks told reporters.
